It's in some cases even easier to get a cracked version of a game running then an official unmodified release (take Ubisoft's MASSIVE DRM fail for example). Not to advocate piracy in anyway but the fact of the matter is that that already happens and IS happening. Maybe there will be that one guy with no life who does that, but a lot of would-be-pirates would not.
So many more people pay the $20 and get the real deal instead of dealing with a complicated piracy method that lets them use some sketchy lobby system that nobody uses. People who say that pirates will just pirate anyway are plain wrong. The Steam system makes piracy very difficult. If there was an option to connect by IP address (what you guys call "LAN", but "LAN" is not actually the correct term), anyone could just download the game and use it on GameRanger with other pirates. The unfortunate problem is that there are pirates. Or you want to use some other matchmaking thing like GameRanger instead of the built-in system. Sometimes, you're somewhere with no Internet connection, and you just want to set up a quick ad-hoc wifi network and play with your friend. Thanks to Steam, I can't make a WINE wrapper for the game. This would be cool for me, but I doubt Steam would do this just because they're jerks and want to keep everyone using their network. You could use the old "LAN" mode to join games over WAN if port forwarding was set up, and that's what GameRanger did.

TLDR: If you can already play age of empires 2 LAN offline (and it functions the same) then why not include offline LAN play in the HD version for convenience? The main reason why I bought this game was for the online play and Im pretty sure thats why everyone else bought it too. So if offline LAN play doesnt decrease sales and makes the users happy why not implement it? Overall I think the number not buying the game because offline LAN is included will approximately equate the number of people now buying the game because it is more exposed. There will also be some people that are potential costomers that wouldnt of bought the game if they hadnt been exposed to the game if their friend hadnt pirated it. However in that group of thousands how many of them would of actually bought the game to play through LAN if it wasnt available to pirate? Currently you can get a copy of age of empires 2 that once modded functions almost exactly like the HD version.

Yeah maybe thousands of people will be able to play the game for free with their friends and maybe some people who would of bought the game wont because they can get a free LANable copy from the internet. Yup offline LAN capability would be nice.

There's a reason we get games on steam, and it's because we're happy to pay for games to have them all in one neat location and support the devs, of course.ĭevs, please keep up the great work with the patches and beta patch releases and add LAN back into this great game, sooner than later. Pirates are gonna pirate, no matter what.
Sure LAN is not a big deal for most people these days, but there are people who still use it and by not supporting the option they aren't detering piracy, they are just alienating those who would have used it and hence chose not to purchase it, or just frustrated those who did purchase it without knowing. Though, had I seen that it didn't support lan mode I wouldn't have purchased it. I'll be honest, I saw AOE2 HD and thought, "YES! The game me and my friend used to lan all of those years back. I just want to be able to LAN a game of AOE2 HD with a friend who has also purchased it and not have to worry about having an internet connection.
Never said anything about one-copy multi-user support. If you don't agree with that sentence, don't buy the game. I want the hardworking devs to get the money they deserve.
